The prize resin doll for Birthday Contest winner!

Last week I took a few days off engraving my new porcelain doll codenamed: 'Madman P', to finally finish making a resin doll prize for this year's winner of my annual Birthday Contest. It was a welcome change for my engraving hand and my routine after a few months of doing basically the same thing. Even art can get boring without variety.

I had spent oh, maybe 2-3 solid days fighting with all of my mohair to make a wig for this girl. With the drought going on right now, it was so static-y and frizzy....and with the glue drying so wonky, I basically just wanted to set everything on fire in my bathtub and watch it burn. But, as usual, it all worked out in the end. Can't make a good doll without a good struggle, and this doll turned out extra-good! Stay tuned for more pictures next week.

The contest submission period is now closed! Thanks to everyone who entered, I'm seeing some amazing entries and it's going to be another tough decision. I will spend the next couple days going through each one in detail. It's such a treat to be able to see all the different approaches people took. I'm blown away by the creativity.

I will announce the winner on March 16th, but it will likely be later in the day (might even be the 17th in some parts of the world). 

Birthday Contest 2014 postponed to next year

Hi all, I know that my birthday contest has become a beloved Enchanted Doll tradition that many of you look forward to every year. Sadly, I must postpone this year's contest until next year. I'm afraid that I'm feeling particularly overwhelmed, and can not handle the responsibility of organizing and judging a contest this year.

My birthday contest is a really important event to me, and I don't want to tarnish it with anything less than a 100% commitment on my part, but I don't have it in me this year. I think I've maxed out my multitasking capacity.

This year I would like to have a quiet birthday, and maybe even take a few days off work as a special treat. I hope you all understand and I look forward to your entries next year!

Dear contestants, sorting your post cards for two days had given me some serious wanderlust! From 425 entries, the top fifty (50) have qualified to move into the next round of the competition. I chose the cards that made me feel longing, nostalgia and wanderlust most intensely. I also judged them on a sense of aesthetic, presentation and meaning. The rest of you who didn't move into the next round, you have my sincere thanks for participating and for making an effort. You guys surprise and inspire me!

At first glance, the image on this card is unremarkable. It's what's written on the back that makes it profound. This is a family home left behind in pursuit of other dreams, to be visited only as an occasional guest. The furtive and awkward angle of the photo, taken over some shrubbery, suggests a secret glimpse of a longed-for place that's been forever consigned to the past. Just out of reach. Very moving. I love Thomas Kinkade's idyllic, magical landscapes. I can feel the cozy warmth radiating from that little cottage. I can smell the sweet wood smoke wafting through the cold air from the chimney. I swear, that if only I manage to get close enough to peek through the lattice window, I will see a steaming apple pie cooling down in a warm, rustic kitchen, and hear the muffled sound of indistinct voices coming coming from somewhere in the house. I long to walk through the little green door, but no one can ever cross that bridge. This card is just so awesome...This simple and whimsical illustration captures the great Northern beauty of wild forests and rolling hills, and the spirit of adventure and comradery. Northern lights are a part of that severe Northern beauty I love so much. They literally take my breath away. I had the privilege of observing them once not far from Vancouver, which is pretty rare this far down south, and I never thought I'd see them here. The sheer scale of them was awe-striking and frightening. Ethereal sheets moved gently above our heads and jutted vertically into the invisible thickness of the atmosphere, marking its height with green glow. I couldn't sleep until the sun came up. Although I kept the contest open for extra 4 days to wait for card stuck in mail limbo, it is still quite possible that not all your cards made it here in time. Enchanted Doll Birthday contest 2013

Hey there, Enchanted Doll lovers! The Annual Enchanted Doll birthday contest is under way, with over a hundred entries received so far! The entry criteria is simple this year: Send me a travel post card to enter an Enchanted Doll. The deadline is Feb 28th.The contest has been a blast. Every morning I wake up and look forward to receiving a new batch of cards, wondering which new places I'll get to see today. My mail man is starting to get a bit weird-ed out and amused. Although hand-made was not a requirement, I am surprised just how many cards I've been getting, were hand crafted. Thank you for making that extra effort.

The Annual Enchanted Doll birthday contest!

Dear Friends, I'm back from my travels and I'm very pleased to announce that the annual 2013 Enchanted Doll birthday contest, where I give away one doll on my birthday, is now open!

I was drawing a map of some of my recent travels when I came up with the submission criteria. To enter the contest, send me a beautiful, captivating and wander-lust-inspiring travel postcard depicting any thing or any place in the world you want. It can be contemporary or vintage, commercial or custom printed, store-bought or hand-made, from your home town or another country, color or black/ white, featuring a painted, drawn or photographed image of nature, cathedrals, cities, mountains, ocean floor or outer space -whatever. Anything is admissible as long as it's in a standard post card format and it stirs your imagination, longing and compels you to visit that place.

Your Rules:

One Card per person. No envelopes-just the postcard. Cards arriving in envelopes will be disqualified. Submission Deadline February 28th, 2013. The winner will be picked from elimination stages starting on March 1st. All the entries will be posted online on March 1st. My top favorite Cards will be selected on march 2nd, and then eliminated randomly in daily draws, until one winner is announced on March 16th.
