I’ve been proofing more textured canvas prints, and they are so tactile! Some of these are now available for preorder in limited editions of 100, for $350 USD, signed and numbered. Email me if you’re interested. Manufacturing time is 6 weeks.
I apply the texture by hand with brushes and acrylic gels to create raised brushstrokes and make the canvases look like oil paintings. Some images call for more texture, and some for less, depending on the content of each image. I particularly enjoy painting hair. It’s very relaxing and cathartic.... and I like touching them afterwards.
Creating these canvases is both a joy and a struggle. It’s a lot more laborious than I ever imagined. Every canvas requires many hours of digital post-production work and several printing attempts to get all the colours balanced just right. More often than not it looks good on screen, but then comes out looking like garbage on canvas; either washed out, or too dark, or too much magenta, or not enough... there’s always something wrong with the first 1-3 print attempts.
Every time I feel good about sending a digital file to the printer, and then it comes out looking terrible, I get momentarily frustrated and disappointed, but never defeated or diverted from my goal. Every failure is an opportunity to learn and improve. Every mistake is an acquired experience and a chance for correction.
My favourite part of making these prints, is an opportunity to collaborate with my life-partner Chadasaurus, as we get to spend many, many hours editing these images together.
These here are the successful, finalized canvas proofs with raised hand-texturing and varnishing, that will go on to become limited editions of 100 pieces each. They are available for preorder @ $350 USD. Check out the ED store to order.
