Lady Skyler (2011)

Lady Skyler

2011 - In Progress

They say that God is in the details, and I truly believe that. Often it is the minutest aspects of a project that make it or break it. I believe that if you are going to do something, you should go all the way with it. Completely overdo it, because many times when it seems as if you have done enough, in actuality you have only just scratched the surface.

This dress was an experiment in stitching nine kinds of lace together to create a very light and intricate dress based on a Victorian-era christening gown. I am drawn to lace like a moth to a flame due to the sheer amount of delicious embroidered detail it contains. One of the challenges of working on a small scale is finding textiles with a weave delicate enough to drape and move naturally with the curves of a tiny doll. My solution was to create my own textile from little bits of fine lace. I believe that Lady Skyler is one of my most subtle, yet technically complicated costuming projects. Very often, achieving the ultimate simplicity requires the most work.
