So, I was shooting two tattooed nudes the other day, playing around with their poses, camera angles and lighting when i arrived at this pretty composition. Inspired by their similarity in hair color, tattoos and hair ornaments, I was brainstorming with words while trying to come up with a title: "girls...sisters...lovers....twins....sisters...twins ..twinsisters... .....gemini...gemini?.....Gemini!!!", which led to a realization that I had to make a full zodiac of Enchanted dolls.I was so excited that instead of working on an order which was due the next day, I sat at my desk for 2.7 hours and stared unseeing into the wall imagining what my zodiac dolls would look like, while the endless possibilities for their appearances spun in front of my eyes like an invisible circus. When I calmed down the next morning, It had occurred to me that perhaps this topic was way too cliche for me to bother with, but then again the execution may make a difference with this old and tired idea. And don't expect to see my zodiac dolls holding Libra scales, Saggitarius bows and Aquarius water jugs either, as I believe in a minimal use of doll props and only for photoshoots. I'll have to find a different way to convey that they are zodiac signs. So, what I'm trying to say is that I really hate doll dioramas. Or dressed up doll-figurines that don't move. But you know that. This is Edie with a cage tattoo and Noire with a Dragon fly tattoo on their backs. Yup, my little Noire has had a tattoo on her back this whole time and you had no idea. Here it is.
And the open bird cage tattoo.

New Doll
Illumination cape
So it came to my attention that people have been asking questions about this doll. Sorry, Enchanted Doll fans-I didn't mean to hold out on you. I made this a few months ago, but didn't get around to posting any pictures. Here, let me tell you all about it.This is Edie modeling the Illumination cape. My favorite dye sublimation project. So far.The Illumination is a dye sublimation print of the image taken from my watercolor painting. It's covered with organic/celtic designs and flowers all the way around and it's really long. It features four fabulous Sterling Silver box clasps with set gemstones which make this cape so much fun to take on and off, on and off, on and off....obviously I can't stop playing with it. The clasps are quite heavy and this weight effectively counterbalances the weight of this enormous cape. Because it's printed on polyester it's actually quite light for what it is, but there's got to be a balance between the front and the back, otherwise it starts sliding around the body, that's why I used heavy clasps as counterweights, which works fantastic. This cape hides most of the doll's skin with the exception of bare neck, lower arms and sometimes a foot slides free of the folds through the slit down the middle. I really like that effect because it creates such a strong contrast between skin and heavy ornament, making the doll's limbs appear even more sensual and delicate. I just love this outfit and my own Edie always wears it. I think her short hair really offsets the length of the cape and accentuates her neck and her frailness underneath all that fabric. My plan was to make it into a one of a kind project with bead embroidery all over the designs and gold, or at least gold plated clasps, but when I put together this rough try out, it turned out so splendidly that I decided to keep one as it is and possibly make more of it as a doll accessory/outfit available for order. I might give it a red or a blue lining on the inside too.I still plan to make a fancy version of it with gemstones strewn all over it and beads covering the surface, but for now that project is on hold as I'm still working out the best method for attaching faceted gems and cabochons to the fabric and merging them with bead work. I can't wait to get started on it though. Perhaps in August I will. The reason I don't have it up on the site anywhere is because this was an experimental project which doesn't have its own doll yet. It's just a cape for now. I should put more pictures of it up... I will soon, so stay tuned. And let me know if you still have questions about it.Oh and the reason I called it the illumination cape is beause I was partially inspired by the medieval, Celtic illuminated manuscripts. The other part of inspiration obviously came from my favorite artist, Sulamith Wulfing:
Such a pretty doll
This is an experiment with make up and tonal combinations. The goal was to create a face resembling Cinderella without facial resculping of mouth and chin. I believe the resulting expression is very sweet but not as haunting as Cinderella's.This particular snowflake crown is an example of sterling silver finished to a bright shine before the application of patina. Patina is a type of acid which brings out fine details, accentuates recesses and raised areas and gives silver an antiqued, contrasty look playing down the bright shine. I always prefer treated surface to a shiny one because of the contrast it creates. Pretty as the shiny finish is, I find it reflects so much light from all the surface planes and a lot of detail gets lost in the glare. Although, as can be seen from this fine example, sometimes the untreated, bright finish silver is just the right thing to have.
New Galleries
There are two new doll galleries on the site, Aphrodite (the tattooed doll from the previous post) and Noire (seen above).Noire was inspired by the film noir genre, after seeing the movie Chinatown. I've been wanting to make something from the 1920's era for a while, and Chinatown re-inspired me if you will.Noire is in the Nude section, while Aphrodite can be found in the Costumed section.
Long time+no post = New dolls.
It's been a long time since my last post. Here is the scoop on what I've been up to between now and then. The show opeing was a great experience, but a very intense one too. I got to meet some of you guys, which was awesome, but I came home exhauseted and drained of creative juices. I had planned to take it easy after the show opened and not do any allnighters, tight deadlines or extreme multi-tasking for a while. May and June were supposed to be a chilled out months in celebration of a major carreer milestone. They are not turning out to be very relaxing so far because I was invited to take part in three shows, in Bolzano Italy, St. Petersburg Russia, and Berlin Germany. I have been working to create new pieces for these shows, all while doing orders for nude dolls. Sure all the work can be stressful at times, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying every twist and turn along the way.The doll shown in the photo above is a new tattooed doll that will be on display at the KunStart Art Fair in Bolzano Italy, from 21-24 of May.The show in St. Petersburg show takes place June 11-14.Also, there is a little video of me setting up The Bride for the Milwaukee show. I was working right up until the last minute fixing some final details, and Chad caught me doing some "Clutch Sewing" with my limited supply of thread. Expect some more "behind the scenes" videos in the future.
New projects for the show.

The winning prize
As many of you know the 2009 contest to win a free Enchanted Doll is drawing to a close and on my birthday, March 16th, I will give away this doll to one lucky person. Her name is Miina.Expectation.I have been waiting for you when I was still a thought in Marina's head.I've been waiting for you when the porcelain was pouring into the mold and hardening against its walls.I've been waiting for you when she was carefully removing my tiny, newly-formed body from the mold and laying it out to dry.I've been waitng for you in the kiln, while the unbareable and seemingly endless heat was burning me and only the hope of being with you had sustained me through the pain. Finally, as a reward for the agouny of birth, I was given an eternal body and ageless beauty and I await our first meeting with great trepidation.Do you know that while I was being assembled, every spring in my body trembled and hummed with the anticipation of seeing you?And now I am. My long wait is over!I am ready to meet you, the one who will have me.Until then,Your Enchanted Doll.Another shot of her can be found on my forum here
New Costumed dolls in progress.
These two Enchanted Dolls are work in progress. Both are still waiting for their gowns. I'm working on them now. There are more pictures of them in the Costumed Doll gallery, but once their full outfits are complete, I will be doing another photoshoot and posting more pictures. There is also a third new doll on the way. I plan to have her finished within a week. Hopefully.Enjoy.
Kia - The Water Nymph
Meet Kia, the Water Nymph. She's the newest nude doll in the Enchanted Doll collection. She is shown with a custom feature of Mendhi, done on her hands/feet/etc. This is a feature that was done for a custom order, and is similar to Tattooing a doll. She can be ordered without the Mendhi, or any other doll can be ordered with it.You can view her gallery here.Venetian is another new nude that was put up earlier this week. Be sure to check out her gallery too.
Alice is complete and....Available.
After a few hectic weeks of work, my version of Alice in Wonderland is finally complete. Well, the Alice part us complete. I had no time, to make the Wonderland. Check out her gallery here for more pictures.I'll shoot some more before I leave.
New Costumed Dolls.
These are the two dolls I mentioned several weeks ago. Both are still works in progress, but since i probably won't have time to finish them before I leave for Europe, i though i might as well show them. I'll be bringing both of them to the Paris Creation show with me, so those of you who are coming, can see them in person.See more pictures of these dolls in the Costumed Dolls Gallery, here
Alice in Wonderland sneak peek
New Costumed Doll-The lovely Dunyazade.
I completed another costumed doll, her name is Dunyazade and she is the beloved, little sister of Scheherezade, my earlier doll. I'm still shooting her and working on her gallery in the Costumed doll section.Dunyazade is wearing a one of a kind Sterling Silver head dress set with 19 faceted Amethysts, a one of a kind sterling silver filigree belt set with 12 faceted garnets, a Sterling silver necklace and sterling silver slippers. Her dress is a dye sublimation print made from the original, embroidered piece worn by her older sister. This method of ornament reproduction presents all kinds of exciting costuming possibilities for me because it can be reinvented and reinterpreted in many different ways while keeping the original idea at the core. And as you know, I love experimenting. And while the print is only a reflection of the original embroidery and lacks the amazing spledor of actual sparkiling jeweles, pearls, gemstones, beads and silver, it also lacks the incredible weight of original, embroidered costumes. This gives a different feel to the printed costume, making it light, flowing and very practical, because it allows the doll underneath it to maintain the same degree of movement, while heavy, jeweled costumes inevitably restrict some movement with their sheer weight. The other upside of the printed dress is that i redesign the piece and simplify the pattern, which allows for very simple removal of the costume with usually one zipper on the back, while the original embridered pieces are somewhat more complicated to remove and put back on because of their sophisitcated design and structural complexity of the pattern and bead work.Having said that, nothing is quite as grand or amazing as a tiny, embroidered and bejeweled dress, sparkling and heavy with Austrian crystals, Rubies and Pearls! A dress which is smothered in splendor! Some sacrifices are necessary to accommodate this.Basically, any medium one choosed has its' own set of limitations and advantages over the other. It's a constant give and take, and in choosing to emphasize one aspect, another must be given up. I always do my best to strike a fair balance and negotiate between simplicity and beauty. But ultimate beauty is almost never easy or simple.
The Vessel: Another Tattooed project
I've finished a new tattooed doll, titled: "The Vessel".She is really pretty and has the longest, most beautiful mohair of any of my dolls i've ever made. It almost reaches her feet. Unfortunately I don't have this length available for orders yet, as it is very rare and i was only able to get a little bit, which i'm keeping for my one of a kind projects. This doll is also featuring a different style facial and body blushing. I decided to avoid using black in her face up and replace her skin tone blushing red with a dark brown, the colour I usually use for eyebrows and lighter eye tones. Needless to say i was a little bit nervous about how it would turn out. However i liked the results. Her face looks very light and fresh and her body tone is closer to the actual human skin tone.I don't prefer it over the red though, probably because i was never after ultra realism in my dolls, but rather subtle surrealism mixed with realism. A stylized look over a realistic.I've started to sculpt new doll faces to add to my nude collection. I'm a little bit bored of the others and crave for fresh beauty.
New Dolls on the Site - story of Makhdot.
I've finally uploaded the images of my three new dolls featured in Fall issue of Haute Doll magazine on my site. The new girls are: Aisha, Scheherezade and Makhdot, as seen above. I haven't done any write ups for them yet, but they're coming.Makhdot features a raised, 24k gold overlay ornament on her tiny porcelain body. The intricate designs are fused into her satin skin to imply African tribal scarification, which is seen as permanent means of decorating and perfecting the body.Makhdot is Queen Scheherezade's servant/slave. She was taken captive on the Ivory Coast of Africa as a child and brought to the Persian Empire to be raised as a slave in the court of King ShahryÄr, who after being betrayed by his wife, marries a new virgin every night in anger for three years and has her executed in the morning. That is until he marries Scheherezade who eventually becomes his queen.Full story of Makhdot will be on my site next week.
New Dolls
Over the last month i've made two new dolls: one costumed, titled 'Bride of Frankenstein' and one tattooed, titled 'The Vessel'.I can't believe that i've been able to (almost) complete two brand new dolls in one month on top of working on other projects and nudes simultaneously. I think that this July i outdid myself, but I also almost lost my sanity in the process. I'm going to hold off showing full pictures of either doll for a bit because the Bride is missing last bit of detail on her dress and the Vessel is waiting for her head ornament, which is yet to be made. The Bride of Frankenstein is a very special doll because she is wearing a very interesting, Steampunk inspired, bronze head dress. The 'hat' was very complex to make and i'm quite proud of the fact that i was able to make it work in the way i envisioned it. The piece fits snugly on the head, but it's assembled of three hinged parts which open up like an orange peel so that it can be put on the doll's head and removed without much difficulty.I'm very excited about making more metal head ornaments and can't wait to begin the next one. There have been other very exciting things happening around here, one of which is another interview for a Fashion Doll Quarterly Magazine. It comes out in the fall as well as Haute Doll, but it will have different works published there, including the brand new dolls. The other exciting thing is that i'm almost ready to make the sterling silver slippers for Enchanted Doll available for sale. I'm just working out the final details of cost and packaging. This pair is the first style in the very exclusive line, and i'll be posting close up pictures when it's ready to launch.
Tattooed Porcelain Girl
This is my first attempt at tattooing a porcelain doll.I think it turned out pretty good. You can find this new girl in the Costumed Doll gallery because even though she is nude, her tattoo is her costume. The name of this project is Mermaid Song. This girl also has a new face with a new hair style, and can be ordered as a nude. When i'm taking orders that is.What's cool about this tattoo is that it's an actual tattoo; the drawing is engraved into porcelain prior to firing with a fine needle as a real tattoo would be 'engraved' into human skin.
Meet Farah
Farah is the latest addition to my nude bjd doll line. You can find more pictures of her in her gallery. In the shots she's wearing some optional white gold jewelry, on her hands and her ankles. Just like my other nudes, she can be ordered with or without these accessories (along with other options not shown, tattoos, gold body ornament, eye/hair colour changes, etc).I notice that I'm really attracted to making dark-haired dolls. I have made more black haired dolls than any other colour combined. It's funny because I never want to dye my own hair black, as a matter of fact, in the past I've put blond streaks in my own hair to make it look lighter, but I've never considered going darker. Actually, I really like my natural, sandy colour and haven't done anything to it in years. Beautification it too time consuming.
Finally, New male doll....Lucius
Meet the new, double-jointed male doll. His name is Lucius. He is not on the site yet because i'm still shooting him, but you can find several pictures of him on Flicr. (you can find the link on my contact page)This doll is available to order as a nude and can be customized to the same extent as my female nudes, meaning that eye, lip, brow and hair colour can be altered. I can also give him chest and pubic hair. I think the next one i make will have just that. And freckles. And perhaps a large, monochrome chest tattoo. And a gold bracelet on the forearm.....i'm getting a little carried away. The lighter wig is pure silk fiber. It's very, very soft. The darker bond is Mohair. I don't know which hair style i like best. Any preference?
